Portia de Rossi was on Oprah November 1st promoting her new book about her life with an eating disorder called Unbearable Lightness. It is an interesting and inspiring story of triumph and healing. Near the end of the interview, Portia describes how she stays on track with her eating disorder recovery and I was taken by her clear and simple description. She says that she eats all food without restriction, does not exercise, but lives an active life moving in a way that she enjoys and naturally desires nutritious food. She says that she stays focused on what and who she loves in life so she isn’t negatively focus on her body (paraphrasing). The way she explained her process of healing reminds me of how natural and instinctive eating and moving our bodies can be for all of us. Oh, how complicated we have made it! With plenty of encouragement from outside forces, we’ve lost our way. Who, outside of us knows what we really need, when and how much better than us? We all have that natural intuition to feed ourselves and move if we connect long enough and consistent enough to hear the whisper inside. Thank you, Mrs. DeGeneres, for reminding me to keep recovery simple.
